Finding Your Creative Flow: Tips and Tricks
As a creative, getting stuck in a rut can be the worst feeling ever, and finding your creative flow can feel overwhelming as you sit there staring out into space. We also know that sometimes all it takes is a little nudge to get that creativity flowing again. Here are some tips and tricks to explore to help you out:
1. Create a Dedicated Workspace
While a room to itself is perhaps ideal, just having any designated workspace can help you get into a creative mindset. Even if it’s just a small corner of your room, make it a place where you can focus and be inspired. When I started my creative journey, I had a desk in the living room, then in the bedroom, and at one point even in my kitchen. I now get to work in a room that is just for me and my creativity.
2. Set Aside Time for Creativity
Schedule regular time for creative activities. Whether it’s an hour a day or a few hours a week, make sure you’re consistently dedicating time to your creative pursuits. My mentor once said: to treat your creative project/goal as if it is your job. It has changed the way I work and create because there is nothing more overwhelming than having an event and stressing if you have enough inventory.
3. Experiment and Try New Things
Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and try new techniques or mediums. Experimentation can lead to unexpected discoveries and spark new ideas. While I wood-burn 90% of the time, now and then I paint, use procraete or see what I can do with my laser.
4. Limit Distractions
Turn off your phone, close your email, and find a quiet place where you can focus. Minimizing distractions will help you stay in the flow. Now this isn’t going to work for everyone. For me, I actually need some kind of background noise, usually the TV because music is distracting to me and makes me want to bang my head half the time.
5. Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness techniques, such as meditation or deep breathing, can help you relax and clear your mind. This can be especially helpful when you’re feeling overwhelmed or stuck. I found going on a hike has the same impact and is not only good for me mentally but also physically.
6. Surround Yourself with Inspiration
Fill your environment with things that inspire you. This could include art, nature, music, or anything that sparks your creativity. Again hiking is a huge influence on my inspiration, sometimes it is a song or even a snippet out of a good book I am reading.
7. Join a Creative Community
Connecting with other creatives can provide support, motivation, and new perspectives. Consider joining a local art group or online community. The Wild-Hearted Creative Community can be just that for you.
8. Take Breaks
It may seem counterintuitive, but taking short breaks can help you stay focused and productive. Step away from your work for a few minutes to rest your mind and recharge. For some of us creatives, doing nothing is torture but hanging out with my pups in the yard to play or watching a good movie helps rest your mind and body.
9. Don’t Be Afraid to Fail
Failure is a natural part of the creative process. Don’t let fear of failure hold you back. Embrace mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow. This is a tough one for so many because perfectionism and fear of failure as well as success can stop your creative flow.
10. Trust Your Intuition
When I have learned one thing in this life, your intuition can be a powerful guide. If something feels right, go with it. Trust your gut and let your creativity flow freely.
Finding your creative flow takes time and practice. Be patient with yourself and enjoy the process.
